Social Ties and User-Generated Content: Evidence from an Online Social Network
نویسندگان
چکیده
We use variation in wind speeds at sur ng locations in Switzerland as plausibly exogenous shifters of userspropensity to post content about their sur ng activity onto an online social network. We exploit this variation to test whether usersonline content generation activity a¤ects their social ties, and whether ties in turn a¤ects content generation. Under weak monotonicity assumptions, we also estimate nonparametric bounds on these e¤ects. Economically signi cant e¤ects of the type above can produce positive feedback that generates local network e¤ects in content generation. When quantitatively signi cant, the increased content and tie density arising from the network e¤ect induces more visitation and browsing on the site, which fuels growth by generating advertising revenue. We nd evidence for such network e¤ects.

Does Give-and-Take Really Matter? Dynamics of Social Interactions in Social Network
Despite the increasing attention paid to the social interaction in online social networks, it is still not clear how social media users interact with each other, consume different content, and expand their social network. This study conceptualizes two types of user engagement (internal and external) and empirically examines the dynamics between user’s engagement, friends’ engagement, and networ...
متن کاملDoes citation reflect social structure?: Longitudinal evidence from the Globenet interdisciplinary research group
Many authors have posited a social component in citation, the consensus being that the citers and citees often have interpersonal as well as intellectual ties. Evidence for this belief has been rather meager, however, in part because social networks researchers have lacked bibliometric data (e.g., pairwise citation counts from online databases) and citation analysts have lacked sociometric data...
متن کاملLifespan and propagation of information in On-line Social Networks: A case study based on Reddit
Since 1950, information flows have been in the centre of scientific research. Up until internet penetration in the late 90s, these studies were based over traditional offline social networks. Several observations in “offline” information flows studies, such as two-step flow of communication and the importance of weak ties, were verified in several “online” studies, showing that the diffused inf...
متن کاملSocial Network Integration and User Content Generation: Evidence from Natural Experiments
This study examines how social network integration (i.e., integration of online platforms with other social media services, for example, with Facebook or Twitter) can affect the characteristics of user-generated content (volume and linguistic features) in the context of online reviews. Building on the social presence theory, we propose a number of hypotheses on how social network integration af...
متن کاملReviving Dormant Ties in an Online Social Network Experiment
Social network users connect and interact with one another to fulfil different kinds of social and information needs. When interaction ceases between two users, we say that their tie becomes dormant. While there are different underlying reasons of dormant ties, it is important to find means to revive such ties so as to maintain vibrancy in the relationships. In this work, we thus focus on desig...
